    She is the Principal Investigator of a USDOE/OSEP collaborative grant with USF and has been the PI and the Coordinator of two additional USDOE, OSEP Personnel Preparation Grants that prepares SLPs to provide services to English Learners with communication disorders, the latter in developing listening and spoken language in children with hearing loss who come from linguistically diverse homes.

    Her research interests include language and literacy development in Hispanic youngsters who are deaf/hard of hearing, and first and second language acquisition in English learners.

    • 6474: Assessment and Management of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations

      This course focuses on the theoretical principles underlying the methods and application of prevention, assessment, and intervention for culturally and linguistically diverse children and adults. Specifically, the course will focus on the identification of characteristics/behaviors that differentiate communication differences from communication disorders in children and adults from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

    • 6327: Aural Habilitation/Rehabilitation

      The primary goal of this course is to provide the students with a requisite foundation for auditory rehabilitation service provision to diverse clients across the life span and in the real world;
      Specifically, the emphasis will be on developing competent professionals with advanced knowledge and skills about the (a) impact of hearing loss on speech and language development; (b) management of hearing and hearing technology; (c) functional use of audition; (d) assessment and management of listening skills and spoken language; (e) evidenced based techniques and strategies available to develop communication development in children and adults with hearing losses, and, (f) the effects of and treatments for hearing impairment across the life span.
