The Legacy of Claire Massey
On June 15, 2009, the School of Social Work lost a colleague who was a devoted mother and friend and consummate professional in social work. Claire Massey passed away after a long battle with breast cancer.

UCF's Andrea Predl Named Florida Student Social Worker of the Year
Andrea Predl, a new graduate of UCF's Bachelor of Social Work program, was named the state's 2009 Student Social Worker of the Year at the National Association of Social Workers – Florida Chapter's annual conference, held June 4-6 in Orlando. She will enter in the school's M.S.W. program this fall.

Congratulations!
Once again, the School of Social Work earned a trophy for having the most number of participants at Lobby Day, an annual event in which students and faculty members from throughout the state travel to Tallahassee to lobby for progressive social work legislation. This year, the school set a new state record with 140 representatives attending the March 31 event. Click

Predl and Rodriquez Honored with Statewide Awards
Social work major Andrea Predl has been selected the State Student Social Worker of the Year by the Florida Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. In addition, Judge Jose Rodriguez (Ninth Judicial Circuit), a member of the college's Dean's Advisory Council, has been selected the State Elected Official of the Year by FL-NASW. They will be formally honored on June 6 at FL-NASW's annual conference in Orlando.

Thames Receives Professional Achievement Award
Judith Thames (Klinkman) (B.A., social welfare/psychology, '73) received the 2008 Professional Achievement Award for the College of Health and Public Affairs at the Black and Gold Gala on Nov. 7. Her long career working for Central Florida seniors includes serving as executive director and CEO of Senior Resource Alliance. In the 1970s, Thames was the founding director of Orange County's first federally funded Meals on Wheels program. She is currently president, a volunteer leadership position, of AARP Florida.

Rothenberg Presents at German Conference
On Nov. 7, Instructor Michael Rothenberg presented "An Exploration of Sexuality and the Media and the Impact on Client Perceptions in Clinical Sexology Practice" at the Conference on Sexuality and the Media in Munich, Germany. The conference was sponsored by the German Society for Social-Scientific Sexuality Research. Rothenberg is coordinator of the Title IV-E Child Welfare Education Program for the School of Social Work.

Walsh Named A "Champion of Children"
Maralee Walsh, coordinator of the M.S.W. program at UCF Daytona Beach, was recently recognized as a "true Champion of Children" by Family Ties, a grassroots organization located in Westchester County, NY. Family Ties provides advocacy and support services to families of children with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Walsh, a former resident of New York, is a member of the the organization's Board of Directors. Click here to read a biography of Walsh read at Family Ties' annual dinner.

"Psychopharmacology: What Every Social Worker Should Know" — A 2-Hour CEU Event
