Clinical Instructor Janet
Whiteside is using mixed-reality
technology to help individuals with acquired
brain injury relearn functional tasks,
such as preparing meals.
UCF researchers from
a variety of disciplines, including computer
science, digital media and cognitive
sciences, have created a mixed-reality
environment by displaying 3D laser, image
and acoustical recordings of a client’s
kitchen over a green-room set. The client
views the environment through a head-mounted
device.
Whiteside and her colleagues
are currently assessing the client’s
ability to function and learn in the
environment and to ultimately transfer
this knowledge to his home environment
