Thomas T. H. Wan
, associate dean for research and director of the Doctoral Program in Public Affairs, has been commended by U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida for completing four years of service as a scientific reviewer of grant applications to the National Institutes of Health. Wan served on the NIH's Health Services Organization and Delivery Study Section. Click here for further information.

Bahadir SahinBahadir Sahin, a third-year doctoral student in public affairs, has received a national PERISHIP Award. This competitive dissertation award of $10,000 will enable Sahin to conduct field studies on crisis management in Spain, England, Turkey and the United States. His dissertation title is "Factors Influencing Effectiveness of Interorganizational Networks Among Crisis Management Organizations: A Comparative Perspective."

Congratulations to Alisha Mays, an undergraduate student assistant in the public affairs' program and legal studies major, for placing first in her class in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's Zone 5, Region 3 championship. Public affairs' doctoral student Karemah Campbell (B.A. '02, M.A. '05) was honored as the "Constituent Chapter Volunteer of the Year" at the UCF Alumni Jefferson Awards Ceremony on April 7. Campbell has been a dedicated volunteer for the Black Alumni Chapter, serving as the chapter's president and a program chair. She has spent many hours participating in events, facilitating partnerships with other chapters and recruiting new members. Click here for a photo.

Public affairs' doctoral student Vener Garayev was awarded the 2009 Student Conference Grant at the American Society for Public Administration's annual conference. Journal Article Defines Public Affairs Education
The winter 2009 issue of the Journal of Public Affairs Education includes an article by three UCF scholars
that offers a definition of public affairs.

"Public Affairs Pedagogy: Applying Student-Centered Learning Concepts to a Doctoral, Introductory, Interdisciplinary Public Affairs Course" was written by Gerald-Mark Breen, a public affairs' doctoral student; Jonathan Matusitz, assistant professor of communication; and Thomas T. H. Wan, director of the public affairs' doctoral program and associate dean for research for the college. (See JPAE, Vol. 15, No. 1, pp. 107-116)

This peer-reviewed publication is the "flagship journal of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration."

Program Director Thomas Wan recently accepted an invitation to serve on the Editorial Board of the Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, a peer-reviewed publication of Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan that is intended for international audiences. The journal is is published by Elsevier and is noted as part of the Science Citation Index-E.

The challenges and opportunities associated with community-based research were the topic of this year's Annual Health and Public Affairs Research Conference at UCF, held Oct. 23.

Wan to Speak in Beijing
Program Director Thomas Wan will speak at the international Healthcare Reform Conference, planned for late September in Beijing, China. Wan is one of just three speakers invited from the United States. He will join a panel to discuss the direction of hospital reform, offering his expertise in health-systems design and evaluation, including the integrated-care delivery system. Beijing University's Renmin Hospital has organized the event to help celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Another Special Issue on Public Affairs Informatics Research is Published in the International Journal of Public Policy
Four faculty members, two students, three alumni and a former postdoctoral fellow from the college are authors of articles published in a third special issue of the International Journal of Public Policy that focuses on Public Affairs Informatics Research.
