RESIDENTS SHARE HEALTH CARE NIGHTMARES AT OBAMA-INSPIRED UCF HEALTH CARE MEETING

Some arrived in scrubs, having hustled from work early to make the meeting. Some modified vacation plans and opted for a trip to the University of Central Florida health care community discussion instead of a day at a theme park. Others arrived with their children, traveling 50 miles to have their voices heard.

TURKISH OFFICIALS COMPLETE PUBLIC SERVICE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

rkish officials who recently participated in the Department of Public Administration's Public Service and Leadership program, run by the Center for Public and Nonprofit Management, gathered today to celebrate their successful completion of the program's requirements. It was the third group from Turkey to finish the program.

REGIONAL CONFERENCE DRAWS HUNDREDS OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATORS

Some 400 public administrators and students attended this year's meeting of the Southeastern Conference for Public Administration, making it the single largest SECOPA gathering in recent history.  SECOPA 2008 was held from September 24 through September 27 in Orlando at the International Plaza Resort and Spa.

The proposal for the Center for Public and Nonprofit Management (CPNM) was approved by the administration of the University of Central Florida on September 18, 2008. Designated as a Type III Center, the new Center for Public and Nonprofit Management will rely solely on external funding - - not appropriated state funds. Organizationally the CPNM is one of the independent centers and institutes
within the College of Health and Public Affairs, and located administratively within the Department of Public Administration.

Kapucu Reaches $1 Million in External Funding.

Associate Professor Naim Kapucu has secured more than $1 million in external funding since he joined the faculty of the Department of Public Administration in 2003. He received his first grant in November of that year.  More .

Jackie Houck and Vanessa Soler, who both graduated with degrees from UCF in 2006, recently took positions at the Lake Eustis Museum of Art.    Jackie received her Master of Nonprofit Management and Vanessa received her BA in Art History, both in fall 2006.   More . . .

New Graduate Certficate Addresses Increasing Demand for Knowledge of Emergency Management and Homeland Security
UCF Graduate Studies has approved the Department of Public Administration’s new Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Homeland Security (EMHS) program. Admission to the program will officially begin in summer 2008.   The program of study will prepare graduate students for careers in the administration of emergency management and homeland security.

The department's Capacity Building Institute recently completed a yearlong capacity building initiative with two grassroots nonprofit organizations in Florida's Polk County — Help Ft. Meade in Ft. Meade and the Women’s Resource Center in Lakeland.

NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT DESCRIBED AS "POSTER CHILD" FOR NONPROFIT PROGRAMS

Provost Terry Hickey described the Nonprofit Management master's program as the "poster child" for online programs. Ninety-nine students were enrolled in the fully online program in fall 2006, far exceeding the projected enrollment of 25. Hickey said he'd like to see other deans use Nonprofit Management as a model to create online programs within their colleges

Turkish Officials Begin Yearlong Leadership Program
A group of six senior government inspectors from Turkey are the first participants in a new public service and leadership program launched this summer by UCF's Department of Public Administration. The program is supported with a grant from Turkey's Ministry of the Interior.

The event will feature keynote speaker Craig Fugate, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. In addition, the department will recognize student inductees into Pi Alpha Alpha, the public administration honor society.

The event will feature a talk by Dr. Montgomery Van Wart titled, "Seven Strategies for Building an Academic Agenda and Getting It Published." Dr. Van Wart is chair of the Department of Public Administration at California State University, San Bernadino, and former chair of UCF's public administration department

Survey: Refusal to Evacuate, Complacency Remain Problems During Hurricanes
After the state had been battered by three hurricanes last year, many residents ignored the threat of Hurricane Jeanne and refused to leave their homes in evacuation zones, county emergency managers reported in a survey released today by Naim Kapucu, assistant professor of public administration.
