EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
GRADUATE PROGRAM
This certificate program is designed as an intensive interdisciplinary educational program for working professionals who either have emergency management and homeland security as part of their current job description or who are interested in expanding their understanding and skills to enter the emergency management and homeland security field. The graduate certificate in Emergency Management and Homeland Security provides an interdisciplinary graduate education for people engaged in, or seeking professional careers in, emergency management and homeland security. The curriculum focuses on managing security threats or crises, natural or man-made disasters, or emergencies through the coordination of public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
Emergency Management and Homeland Security is currently the one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 28% increase between 2002 and 2012 and strong industry growth in the government, private, and non-profit sector. To meet this growing demand, UCF now offers a graduate certificate program in Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
The National Response Framework (NRF), previously National Response Plan (NRP), places strong emphasis on coordination and collaboration at all levels of government and between private and nonprofit sectors. The courses in this certificate program focus on that collaborative effort. Courses are held in the evenings and taught by experienced academics and professionals. FEMA’s Professional Development Series (PDS) is built into the curriculum. Students who complete FEMA's PDS receive a certificate of completion for their participation in the series.
The program’s course work is interdisciplinary, offering core courses from a public administration and management perspective. Electives are diverse and come from various departments. They include such topics as Regional Planning and Design, Criminal Justice Responses to Terrorism, Health Care Decision Sciences and Knowledge Management,; Seminar in American Security Policy, and Seminar in Weapons of Mass Destruction.
The EMHS certificate program curriculum consists of 18 credits. Students complete a core of four courses (12 credits) and two electives (6 credits).
Admission requirement for the EMHS certificate is completion of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Application Process
Application to the Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Homeland Security will begin in summer 2008. Applications will be accepted for each semester. Apply online at http://www.graduate.ucf.edu.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
Minor in Emergency Management and Homeland Security
The minor in Emergency Management and Homeland Security provides training covering the comprehensive disaster management cycle (emergency planning, mitigation, response, and recovery). Students completing this minor will gain additional insight and knowledge that supports employment in various federal, state and local government organizations and their partner organizations; for example, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Occupational Health & Safety Administration, the Orange County Emergency Management Division, the Federal Emergency Management Agency or the Homeland Security Agency.
Students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program to declare this minor. The program consists of five core courses (15 credits), and one restricted elective course (3 credits).

There are no additional requirements for admission into the undergraduate public administration programs beyond admission to UCF. Students pursuing an undergraduate certificate or minor must be in a degree-seeking program and the certificate or minor is awarded at completion of the degree program. To declare a minor in Emergency Management and Homeland Security, students must complete a Minor Declaration form. The form is available in the COHPA Undergraduate Student Services Office, HPA II Suite 115.
There is no program-specific application deadline for this degree as it is an open enrollment program; however, students must comply with all UCF and College of Health and Public Affairs procedures and deadlines.
