Orlando Living

Orlando Cityscape

Orlando is well known around the world as a vacation destination, offering world-class golf, dining, shopping and family attractions. But Orlando also is increasingly known for its major high-techology industries, including optics and photonics, modeling and simulation, life science and biotechnology, and digital media. The city's affordable housing, great schools, high standard of living, health care facilities, cultural diversity and mild climate make it a popular place to live.

Orlando's population of 2 million is situated in the center of Florida, almost midway between the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Orlando may have the world's best selection of theme parks, but the city also boasts a wide range of cultural attractions including the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Orlando Science Center, Bob Carr Performing Arts Center and Cornell Fine Arts Museum. It is also well known for its many golf courses that are open year round.

Orlando has fabulous parks sprinkled all around the city, including Lake Eola, where you can walk or jog around the lake along the paved path or paddle one of the swan boats into the lake. Every weekend there is a farmers' market, and frequently there are musical events. Additionally, Leu Gardens in Orlando and Bok Tower Gardens in nearby Lake Wales highlight Central Florida's spectacular flora.

Head to the coast and you can visit the famous beaches at Daytona or Cocoa or visit the Kennedy Space Center and Port Canaveral, a major cruise-ship port. Just up the road is the beautiful Blue Springs State Park, where in winter, when the temperature drops to a chilly 60 degrees, manatees swim up the St. John's River to take refuge in the warm 73 degree water. During the summer you can kayak, swim or snorkel in the springs' clear waters.

The cost of living in Orlando is competitive. Orlando's 115 designated neighborhoods offer a variety of housing options, ranging from condos to starter homes to older Victorian homes. The city's neighborhoods includes historic Winter Park, known for its tree-lined streets, annual art festival, shopping and museums. Also nearby is the planned community of Baldwin Park, with its miles of walking trails and a vibrant town center. A 30-minute drive to the south is Lake Nona, home to the burgeoning Medical City and many developing neighborhoods.

World-class dining is available downtown and in neighborhoods such as Winter Park or International Drive. In recent years, a robust gourmet food-truck culture has emerged as well. In addition, downtown Orlando offers an eclectic nightlife scene.
