Hurak Receives Memorial Scholarship
Criminal justice junior Jessica Hurak received the Detective Barry Pruette Memorial Scholarship from the Altamonte Springs Police Department on July 15, 2004. The scholarship benefits a University of Central Florida junior or senior majoring in criminal justice who plans to enter law enforcement, and is in the amount of $1,000.
This competitive scholarship honors the memory of Detective Barry Pruette, who served the Altamonte Springs Police Department for many years, earning respect from his peers, the citizens he served and even the criminals he brought to justice.
Hurak plans to continue her education by earning a master's degree in criminal justice from UCF and then pursue a career in federal law enforcement. The Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies is extremely grateful to the men and women of the Altamonte Springs Police Department who have recognized Hurak for her past accomplishments and her future potential.
The Altamonte Springs Police Department formed the scholarship with two purposes in mind. The first is to honor the memory Pruette, who passed away in May 2000 at the age of 42. The fund is sponsored by the Altamonte Springs Rotary Club, with scholarships paid to attend UCF. The second is to help cultivate the ambitions and goals of young people who have selected law enforcement as their calling in life. This is the fourth scholarship given out since the program's inception.
