In the Community

The College of Health and Public Affairs is actively engaged in education, research, service and community partnerships that enrich the lives of its students, faculty and staff while strengthening communities both in the region and beyond.

Highlights

  • The School of Social Work is training child protective investigators with a $1.4 million contract from Florida Department of Children and Families.
  • The health care informatics program, the only one of its kind in Florida, prepares professionals to work with electronic medical record systems.
  • The Communication Disorders Clinic annually serves more than 1,000 children and adults with speech, language and hearing problems.
  • The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities annually coordinates services for 6,000 children in seven-county service area.
  • The Department of Criminal Justice is establishing human rights centers in Russia with support from a U.S. State Department grant.
  • The Center for Public and Nonprofit Management recently provided technical support and training to 80 local nonprofits with a $1 million federal grant.

Student Service-Learning

Many of the college's students gain real-world experience while addressing needs in the community through service-learning; for example:

  • Doctor of Physical Therapy students complete 30 weeks of full-time clinical training at affiliated sites throughout the region.
  • Master of Public Administration students assess, analyze or evaluate programs for local public and nonprofit organizations.
  • Nearly 200 health services administration majors annually complete a semester-long internship at a health care organization.
  • Social work majors annually gather supplies from organizations and distribute them to disadvantaged citizens in the region.

Regional Campus & Online Programs

  • The college offers bachelor's degree, master's degree or minor programs at all nine of UCF's regional campuses.
  • The college offers many online courses and several completely online programs and is a leader in online education at UCF.

Alumni Serving the Region

College alumni serve the region in many ways; highlights include:

  • The police chiefs for Altamonte Springs, Lake Mary, Ocoee, Palm Bay, Sanford and St. Augustine Beach are graduates of the college's criminal justice or public administration programs.
  • The managers of Brevard, Lake, Osceola and Seminole counties are graduates of the college's Master of Public Administration program. Learn more
  • The chief executive officers of Orlando Health in Orange County, Halifax Health Medical Center of Port Orange in Volusia County, and Palm Bay Hospital and Viera Hospital in Brevard County are graduates of health-related programs in the college.

Center for Community Partnerships 

The College of Health and Public Affairs has an extensive network of partnerships with public and private organizations that focus on strengthening communities.

The college values these relationships so highly that it created a Center for Community Partnerships to identify and enhance linkages between the college and community.

One highlight is the college's new long-term partnership with the Children's Home Society of Florida to establish innovative community schools, including one at Evans High in Orlando.
