Radiologic Sciences Program Mission Statement
The mission of the Radiologic Sciences Program is to deliver a comprehensive educational program for entry-level students and ARRT certified Radiologic Technologists to support the medical communities of Central Florida and through distance learning, the State of Florida. The primary purpose of the program is the development of clinical competency in conventional radiography and the development of specific clinical skills in the advanced imaging modalities. The program is designed to enable the learner to realize his/her potential for personal and professional growth by participating in a variety of didactic and clinical learning experiences that include cognitive, psychomotor, and affective components. Personal and professional growth is dependent on the guidance of the faculty and the efforts of the individual. Because research is an essential component of the learning process, students are provided with opportunities to integrate research projects into their education.
The goals of the program are to provide the state of Florida and more specifically, Central Florida, with graduates who possess the:
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills to practice as clinically competent radiographers
- Professional values and attributes to maintain a high level of ethical conduct with patients employers, colleagues, and other members of the health care team
- Ability to assume leadership roles in their community and profession
- Motivation to continue their professional growth and development
- To provide continuing education for ARRT certified Registered Technologists
Degree Overview
The University of Central Florida offers the only accredited Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences degree program in the state of Florida. Graduates are prepared to function as clinically competent radiographers with the skills and experience to advance to leadership positions in their profession.
A solid foundation in the sciences is necessary for Radiologic Sciences students to move ahead and meet the rapid and sophisticated changes taking place in the health-care industry. Students begin their professional courses during the junior year following the completion of their general education and prerequisite courses. Completion of the professional courses requires two years of full-time study. Professional courses include both didactic and clinical education courses. Didactic courses are offered both in the classroom and on the Internet. Clinical education courses provide the opportunity to develop clinical competencies in the environment of one of the program's affiliated medical facilities. These facilities include Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women, Central Florida Regional Hospital, Drew Medical, Health Central, HealthSouth Diagnostic Center, Jewett Orthopedic Clinic, Orlando Regional Lucerne Hospital, Orlando Regional Medical Center, Regional MRI, South Seminole Hospital, UCF Student Health Services and University Diagnostic Institute.
The radiography program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Graduates are eligible to apply for admission to the certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
