Doctorate of Physical Therapy
This professional curriculum is a full-time program that includes both classroom and clinical internships. Students who successfully complete the program will qualify to take the national physical therapy licensure examination. Students are encouraged to become members of the American Physical Therapy Association. UCF's program in physical therapy received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education in 2004. That accreditation status will remain in force until May 2014.
For information on prerequisites, admission requirements and the official program of study, please refer to the UCF Graduate Catalog.
The Program in Physical Therapy is part of the Department of Health Professions in the College of Health and Public Affairs. We are located in HPA I (Health and Public Affairs building I) in Suite 256. Our phone number is 407-823-3470 and fax is 407-823-3464.
The Program in Physical Therapy is a 36-month post-baccalaureate program. UCF accepted its first class of physical therapy students in 1992. Each admitting class is limited to 32 students. The curriculum begins once per year in the summer. Admission requirements include acceptance by the program, completion of a baccalaureate degree in a relevant discipline, an overall 3.0 GPA in the major with a minimum 3.0 GPA in prerequisite courses, competitive GRE scores, a formal interview, and 30 hours of observation in physical therapy. Students will graduate with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy.
The clinical education component of the curriculum was developed in consultation with a task force of physical therapists and facilities from the East Central District of the Florida Physical Therapy Association. This portion of the curriculum allows students to practice under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist during their educational training. Clinical education occurs at the following four points in the curriculum:
- Clinical Education I - Fall Term of Year Two
- Advanced Clinical Education I - Last 6 weeks of Spring Term of Year Two
- Advanced Clinical Education II - Fall Term of Year Two
- Advanced Clinical Education III - Spring Term of Year Three
Applicants should note that one or more of the clinical practicums may be assigned at a site outside of the Orlando area, which may require the student to provide his/her own transportation and housing.
