ORLANDO, April 10, 2009 — UCF physical therapy students recently
learned the perspectives of a spinal-cord injury patient, his significant
other and his family during a laboratory that is part of the course,
"Advanced Neurological Physical Therapy" (PHT 6719).

Physical therapy Director Gerry Smith invited patient Josh Roy to the
laboratory to share the history of his injury and to describe his physical
therapy plan of care and progress. Accompanying Roy were his
"physical therapist family" and his girlfriend, said Assistant Director
Judi Schack Dugre.

Roy said he was injured in an accident that occurred when he briefly fell
asleep at the wheel of the truck he was driving. When his vehicle flipped
several times, he was thrown out and landed in the road. A witness to
the accident positioned his vehicle in the road to prevent others from
hitting Roy.

After Roy shared his story, the students were permitted to evaluate him
and determine the level of his injury based on clinical findings.
