Congratulations!
Amanda Zak (B.S., Health Information Management, '07) was selected the most outstanding HIM student in the state for 2007 by the Florida Health Information Management Association. The award was presented at the association's annual meeting, held in Orlando, in June. Zak begins the Master of Science in Health Services Administration program at UCF this fall. She hopes to begin her professional career working for a government hospital.
Academic Learning Compact
The health information management program at UCF is an upper-division, limited-access professional curriculum leading to a bachelor of science. The professional phase of the program emphasizes health information management, business organization and management, health care finance, computer applications in healthcare, systems analysis, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical coding and medicolegal aspects of health records. The curriculum is designed to present a correlation between classroom theory and practical experience. The practical instruction is gained through supervised professional practice experiences in a health-care setting that will occur in health-care facilities throughout the state of Florida. The summer term of the senior year consists of a management affiliation for five weeks in a health care facility. After the management affiliation, the students return to campus for completion of course requirements.
Graduates are eligible to apply to write the National Registration Examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association to qualify as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
The curriculum of the health information management program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health
Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Enrollment in the program is restricted due to the student demand for admission to the major, limited clinical sites and accreditation guidelines.
IMPORTANT: Please note that acceptance to the university does not constitute admission to the upper-division, limited-access health information management program. Students must make separate application to the program prior to Feb. 1 of the admission is sought.
The official program of study for the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management is available online in the UCF Undergraduate Catalog.
Internships
All HIM students gain practical experience through unpaid Professional Practice Experiences Classes and a five-week management affiliation in health-care facilities that are geared toward their career aspirations. Many of our students are in high demand with local hospitals, and they work part time during the last two years of the program in local health care facilities.
