TEACHING

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders prides itself on its diverse academic and clinical teaching faculty. In 2006, department students rated the quality of instruction to be the most outstanding in the College of Health and Public Affairs.

Teaching in traditional academic courses occurs in different formats — face-to-face, mixed-mode and web-based — and through various strategies such as lectures, discussions, seminars, cooperative learning groups, hands-on laboratory tutorials, one-on-one faculty mentoring, and electronic conversations via e-mail and chat groups. A few faculty members at both the undergraduate and graduate levels also incorporate service-learning components into their courses.

In the speech-language pathology master’s degree program, clinic practicum and externships comprise a substantial portion of students’ clinical education. In these experiences, clinical educators teach through clinical seminars; supervisory conferences; modeling and coaching across a wide variety of prevention, screening, assessment and treatment opportunities with language, speech, fluency, voice and swallowing disorders; hearing problems; and reading disabilities.

Many of the department’s faculty members have been recognized for their outstanding teaching performance at UCF and other universities:
