ACADEMIC ADVISING

In keeping with UCF's mission, the College of Health and Public Affairs recognizes that education is more than the classroom experience. Another component is academic advising, an educational process that begins at university orientations and continues at advising sessions that help students clarify their life goals and reach their maximum educational potential. Through academic advising, the college provides guidance, information and assistance to students. It also ensures that each student makes the best possible use of the university's resources.

New Student Orientation

All newly admitted students are advised at a mandatory orientation session. Students receive documentation about signing up for the orientation program once they are admitted to the university. At the orientation, students meet with representatives from Undergraduate Student Services. Advisers discuss the major requirements and students create schedules for the incoming term.

Students transferring credits into UCF are encouraged to bring copies of their transcripts (unofficial will be accepted for advisement). University records may not be complete at the time students attend orientation, so transcripts will assist in the advisement and registration process. Florida public community college and state university transfer students are encouraged to speak with an adviser at their current institution early in their academic career. Early advisement ensures that students are taking the correct courses prior to transferring to UCF.

Limited-Access Academic Advising

Some majors in the College of Health and Public Affairs require a separate program application and course prerequisites in order to be accepted into the major. Students usually enter these limited-access majors during their junior year. Students seeking admission into one of these programs are encouraged to meet with an Undergraduate Student Services adviser at least once per semester. It is important that these students remain on track in meeting program requirements to ensure they are qualified to apply.

Pending/ Undecided

Undergraduate Student Services provides advisement for all pending and undecided undergraduates in the college.

"Pending" status is used to define a student who is seeking admission to a limited-access program but has not been admitted to the program. This student is not permitted to take courses within the program or to graduate from the university as "pending." All students with a limited-access major in the College of Health and Public Affairs will be advised by an Undergraduate Student Services adviser.

If a student is "undecided" about a major, an Undergraduate Student Services adviser is available to explore possible majors with the student and/or to refer the student to appropriate faculty members and university services to further explore career options.

Faculty Referrals

An Undergraduate Student Services adviser may refer a student to a faculty adviser once a student is accepted into a major or has begun course work in a major. The student can find the faculty adviser by contacting Undergraduate Student Services. A student may be referred to a faculty adviser for career information and/or internship information.
