About this Photo

Orlando, Dec. 6, 2006 — The Mock Trial Team at UCF competed Dec. 2-3, 2006, at the Yale Mock Trial Tournament, the largest trial tournament in the nation, and Team 868 (pictured above) placed first in one of two divisions, beating teams from 30 other colleges and universities, including those from Princeton and Yale.

The trial team's coordinator, legal studies Instructor Margarita Koblasz, provides a full report on the tournament below.

"... This year there were 65 teams from around the country. The teams were divided into two divisions. Our division had 31 teams, which included Amherst, Boston College, Coast Guard, Fordham, George Washington, Lewis, Penn State, Princeton, St. John's, Hartford, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Redlands, Wesleyan, William Woods, Yale and Wellesley.

Team 868, which consists of [left to right in photo] Natalie Boyajian, Captain Jayson Serrano, Brenna Egan, Candace Stuart, Jean Marc Chanoine, Joe Etter, Kendell Ali and [center] Juan Medolla, took first place in our division with a record of 8-0. They were the only team of the 65 present at the entire tournament to go undefeated!

They then faced the winner of the other division in the championship round, Boston University (7-1). The championship round consisted of three judges. Two of the judges scored the teams. One of the judges presided. Each team took one ballot. They each lost one ballot by the same number of points. So it came down to a tie breaker, which meant the presiding judge picked which team won and he chose Boston. So we were the runner-up."
