Orlando, Oct. 30, 2006 — National experts in emergency management and planning, including Dr. Robert Ursano of the U.S. Uniformed Services University (shown above), spoke at the Third Annual Health and Public Affairs Research Conference, held Oct. 27, 2006, in the FAIRWINDS Alumni Center.

Some 100 faculty members, students and community members gathered for the daylong event, which featured guest speakers, panel discussions and a research poster session. (Click here to view the conference agenda.)

Ursano discussed the need for public education and preparedness in responding to disaster. Photographs of other guest speakers and their topics appear below.

The conference was jointly sponsored by the Doctoral Program in Public Affairs and Center for Community Partnerships in the College of Health and Public Affairs.


David McEntire, associate professor of public admin-
istration at the University of North Texas, offered "A
Critique on Emergency Management Policy."


Craig Fugate, director of the Florida Division of
Emergency Management, presented "Disasters:
Building a Culture of Preparedness."


Naim Kapucu, assistant professor of public admini-
stration at UCF, spoke on "Planning for Disasters and
Responding to Catastrophes."


Research posters were displayed throughout the first
floor of the FAIRWINDS Alumni Center.
