Information Sharing in Law Enforcement

An interdisciplinary team led by Mike Reynolds, associate professor of criminal justice, and Ron Eaglin, associate professor of computer engineering and computer science, has created a system that enables law enforcement agencies to search the databases of many other agencies over a secure, dedicated network.

More than 100 state and local law enforcement agencies are currently involved in using the system, named the Florida Integrated Network for Data Exchange and Retrieval, or “FINDER.”

Improving Services for the Homeless

The Center for Community Partnerships is working with local government agencies and nonprofits to design a "Preferred-Living System" for homeless individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues.

Center Director Larry Martin recently reported 17 recommendations to improve the coordination of resources for the homeless.

The work is funded by the Board of the Orlando Area Trust for the Homeless.

Mixed-Reality Rehabilitation

Communicative disorders Clinical Instructor Janet Whiteside is using mixed-reality technology to help individuals with acquired brain injury relearn functional tasks, such as preparing meals.

UCF researchers from a variety of disciplines, including computer science, digital media and cognitive sciences, have created a mixed-reality environment by displaying 3D laser, image and acoustical recordings of a client’s kitchen over a green-room set. The client views the environment through a head-mounted device.

Whiteside and her colleagues are currently assessing the client’s ability to function and learn in the environment and to ultimately transfer this knowledge to his home environment
