Missour State University in Springfield announced March 21 that Dean Belinda McCarthy has accepted a position as MSU's first provost, effective July 1. The provost is the chief academic officer of the university, responsible for oversight of all academic programs and a number of academic support programs.

McCarthy has been dean of the College of Health and Public Affairs since its founding in 1990.

"We found an extremely well-qualitifed academic leader to be the first provost at Missouri State University leadership team," said President Michael T. Nietzel. "I have talked about raising sights and increasing expectations at Missouri State and Dr. McCarthy will help us do exactly that. She brings great talent and experience to the position."

As dean, McCarthy has managed a budget of approximately $30 million and supervised an administrative staff that includes three associate deans and offices in development, communications, community and alumni relations, budget, advisement, research and technology.

"I have greatly enjoyed my years at UCF and the opportunity to build strong programs, recruit wonderful faculty and staff, and work with chairs and directors as a leadership team," McCarthy wrote in a message to the college's faculty and staff. "But Missouri State University has provided me an opportunity I cannot refuse."

Before joining the University of Central Florida, McCarthy served as associate dean from 1984-89 and then interim dean from 1989-1990 for the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. From 1987-89, she served as director of the Women’s Studies Program at UAB.

McCarthy said she will leave UCF in early June and that plans for her replacement will be announced in the near future.
