Orlando, October 25, 2007 — Students in the undergraduate criminal justice course "Police and Society" met with K9 handler and Orange County Sheriff's Office Corporal Mike Carden and his canine partner, Hero, earlier this month.
During the class, Carden discussed the OCSO's K9 unit and the training involved for both the canine and police handler to become a member of the team.
Students were able to ask questions about police use-of-force, community interaction and probable cause as related to the K9 unit as part of the course curriculum.
Ross Wolf, assistant professor of criminal justice and the course instructor, includes many sessions like this throughout the semester.
“I find that students are able to absorb the course material much better when they've gotten the experience of talking directly to the people who are out there working in the field,” Wolf said.
