About this Photo

Orlando, Nov. 17, 2006 — The Orange County "Hazmat" (hazardous material) unit provided cardiopulmonary sciences' students with a hands-on workshop on Hazmat equipment and ventilators during its visit to the college on Nov. 15, 2006. The workshop included opportunities to try on the equipment and tour the unit's specially equipped truck (see photos below).

Melanie McDonough (standing at right), director of clinical education for the cardiopulmonary sciences program, said the workshop is part of a new emergency-preparedness program being tested by the Florida Department of Health. UCF is one of three institutions statewide to offer the pilot program.

McDonough explained that the state will require all practicing respiratory therapists to take an educational program like this every two years beginning in June 2007.
